Waqf Amendment Bill: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) of Parliament has approved amendments to the Waqf Bill. In which 14 amendments introduced by the BJP led NDA government have been approved. Whereas all the recommendations given by the opposition have been rejected. A total of 67 proposals were presented. In which 23 changes were presented by BJP MPs and 44 recommendations were presented by the opposition.
Every clause was discussed in the JPC meeting held at 11 am today on Waqf Bill amendment. JPC chairperson Jagdambika Pal accepted all the 14 amendments proposed by the NDA, saying, ‘The amendments made by the committee will make the law better and more effective. The opposition criticized this bill and accused it of ruining the process of democracy. Discussion on 44 amendments was going on for the last six months. Amendments were sought from all the members. In today’s last meeting, 14 amendments were approved by majority. Whereas 10 votes in support and 16 votes against the amendments suggested by the opposition were rejected.
The decision on the 14 amendments presented in the proposal will be finalized on January 29. Later the final report will be presented on January 31. Earlier, the JPC was directed to submit its final report on the issue on November 29. But later the deadline was extended to 13 February. The JPC suspended 10 opposition MPs after they complained that they did not get enough time to study the amendments introduced in the Waqf Amendment Bill. The biggest critics of the bill include Trinamool Congress’s Kalyan Banerjee and AIMIM’s Owaisi.
