News India Live, Digital Desk: Government takes Big Action Against Online Gambling: The government has taken very strict steps to curb the increasing cases of online gambling and betting in India. In the last three years, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) has issued orders to block a total of 1524 such websites and mobile apps that were promoting illegal gambling activities. This action has been taken in view of the negative effects of these illegal platforms falling on society and financial system.
The main reason for this strictness of the government is to control the dangers arising for financial deception, money laundering and public system. Online gambling in India is illegal anyway, but despite this, many platforms and apps were attracting the youth indiscriminately through advertisements, causing many families to get caught in financial crisis. Complaints of fraud related to these activities were increasing continuously, after which the ministry took this drastic step.
In this entire exercise, big technology companies like Google and Meta are also under investigation. The ministry is seeking answers from these companies about advertisements that are related to illegal online gambling and betting on their social media platforms and app stores. The government says that these platforms not only provide these apps, but also through their algorithm, they also bring them to the users on a large scale, which strengthens these activities.
Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Kirti Vardhan Singh, has clarified in this regard, clarifying in the Lok Sabha that the government is committed to ensure a safe and reliable online atmosphere. He said that this action has been taken under the Information Technology (intermediate guidelines and the Digital Media Code of Conduct), which controls such activities. This step is a major effort to create a clean digital ecosystem and to save citizens, especially youth from online threats.
