Ahmedabad: The Ministry of Corporate Affairs is preparing to remove the names of more than 3,300 companies from the official records. Applications have been received to remove the names of these companies.

According to the latest information available with the ministry, the company registrars of various states and union territories issued public notices in April regarding the removal of these companies as per the provisions of the Companies Act.

Statistics show that the process of removing more than 3,300 companies from official records is going on in states and union territories. Out of the total companies, more than 700 are in Maharashtra, around 500 in Delhi, more than 350 in Karnataka and more than 200 in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

The company registrar received applications from companies on certain grounds under Section 248 (2) of the Companies Act, including that they failed to start a business within a year of their incorporation or did not do any business or operations for two financial years.

These companies have requested that their names be removed from government records. Under Section 248 (2), a company can file an application to remove their names under certain conditions, after the discharge of all its liabilities by a special proposal or with the consent of its 75% members in relation to the repayment share capital.

At the end of March this year, 18,50,932 out of a total of 28,52,449 registered companies in the country were active companies. Among the 37 states/union territories, Maharashtra (19 percent) is a state with the most active companies, followed by Delhi (14 percent) and West Bengal (8 percent). There has been an increase in the number of companies active in the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana as compared to February 2025.

The union territories have seen an increase of 143 companies in Jammu and Kashmir as compared to February 2025.
