The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has given four weeks to the Union Home Ministry to decide on the issue of dual citizenship of Congress MP and Opposition Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, four weeks to the Ministry of Home Affairs. , The Ministry had sought eight weeks in the matter, which was rejected by the court and asked to take a decision on it within four weeks. It is alleged that Rahul Gandhi also has British citizenship and this question has been in discussion for the last several years. A PIL has been filed on this issue, whose hearing is going on in the High Court.

In the last hearing on December 19, the High Court directed the Central Government to present the details of the action taken in the court on March 24, but the central government could not do so. This PIL has been filed by Karnataka social activist S Vignesh Shishir. According to this, Rahul Gandhi is a citizen of both India and Britain, who is a violation of the eligibility criteria to contest elections under Article 84 (A) of the Constitution. If this is proved, Rahul Gandhi may lose his parliament membership.

What was said in the PIL?

Let us tell you that on 1 July 2024 last year, BJP leader and lawyer S Vignesh Shishir filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court alleging that Rahul Gandhi also has British citizenship. The petitioner alleged this in 2022 citing a secret email of the British government. In the petition, he has also demanded Rahul Gandhi’s cancellation of Indian citizenship under Section 9 (2) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955.

The petition said that he contested from Rae Bareli by hiding his British citizenship, so his election should also be canceled. The petitioner has also said that he took up the matter before several competent authorities but no action was taken and hence he had to resort to the PIL.
