8th pay commission latest news today : The era of the Seventh Pay Commission is now coming to an end and the eyes of government employees are fixed on the Eighth Pay Commission. Everyone wants to know how much the salary will increase this time and the most talked about thing is about the fitment factor. Another good news for the employees is that when the Eighth Pay Commission will be implemented, they can get arrears of up to Rs 6 lakh. Let us understand it in simple language.

How far has the matter reached now?

The government had started preparations for the Eighth Pay Commission from January 2025 itself, but the rules and scope of its functioning have not been decided yet. The government had sought suggestions on this from the National Council-Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM). The Secretary of NC-JCM had said in August that these rules could be approved soon. However, most people believe that it is difficult to announce it before Diwali. If we look at the experiences of previous Pay Commissions, it takes about one and a half to two years for the Commission to prepare its report and submit it to the government.

Government will also take time in investigation

When the commission submits its report to the government, the government also takes 3 to 9 months to examine and implement it. The previous i.e. Seventh Pay Commission was formed in February 2014 and its report was submitted in November 2015. Even if the formation of a new pay commission is announced this month, there is little hope that its report will come before April 2027. A senior union leader believes that the new pay commission may be implemented from July 2027.

Then why arrears and how much will be received?

This is where the good news lies for the employees. The deadline of the Seventh Pay Commission is ending in December 2025. According to the rules, the Eighth Pay Commission will be considered effective from January 1, 2026. If its implementation is announced in July 2027, then the employees will get the arrears of the entire 18 months from January 2026 to July 2027 together.

This 18 months arrears will be a huge financial relief for lakhs of employees. This pay commission will directly benefit 50 lakh central employees and 65 lakh pensioners of the country, which also includes army personnel and retired employees.

Your salary will increase with this formula

The increase in salary and pension of employees is based on the fitment factor only. According to former Finance Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg, the government can approve fitment factor between 1.92 to 2.08. At the same time, employee organizations are demanding that the fitment factor be kept at 2.86 in the new pay commission. If this demand of the employees is accepted, there will be a huge jump in salaries.

Whose salary can increase by how much?

If the fitment factor is considered to be 2.86, then see who’s salary can increase by how much:

  • Peon and Attendant: The current salary is Rs 18,000, which can increase to around Rs 51,480. That means an increase of Rs 33,480 every month.
  • Lower Division Clerk: The current salary is Rs 19,900, which can increase to around Rs 56,914. That means an increase of Rs 37,014 every month.
  • Constable/Skilled Employee: The current salary is Rs 21,700, which will increase to approximately Rs 62,062. That means an increase of Rs 40,362 every month.
  • Stenographer/Junior Clerk: The current salary is Rs 25,500, which will increase to approximately Rs 72,930. That means an increase of Rs 47,430 every month.

Mathematics of arrears of Rs 6 lakh

As mentioned above, employees can get arrears of up to 18 months. If we take the example of increased salary of peon and attendant (Rs 33,480 per month), then the total arrears of 18 months will be around (Rs 33,480 x 18 months) = Rs 6,02,640. This is a huge amount which the employees are eagerly waiting for.
