New Delhi: Sudden nausea or vomiting while traveling in a car, bus or ship is a common experience, called ‘motion sickness’. This situation arises when the signs from our senses become contradictory to our brain.
The main cause of motion sickness:
Conflict of signals: During travel, our eyes look at stable things inside the car, such as car seats, window glass or dashboard. On the other hand, the vestibular system of our ear (which detects balance and motion) feels every movement of the car, such as moving, turning, slowing or holding speed.
Confusion in the mind: When the mind gets these opposite signs – that is, the eyes are saying that nothing is moving, while the ear is saying that the speed is happening – then it gets confused. The brain interprets this contradiction as a sign of poison present in the body, and triggers vomiting as a way to remove that potential poison.
Who has more motion sickness?
Typically, children (especially between 2 to 12 years of age) and teenagers are more affected by this problem. In addition, people who have migraine problems, suffer from internal problems of the ear, or pregnant women can also be more sensitive to motion sickness. Reading books during the journey, using phone or sitting backwards can also increase this problem.
Remedy to escape:
Look at the front side during the journey and try to focus on the horizon.
While driving or sitting on the front seat, where you can see the road ahead.
Avoid reading anything during the journey or watching the screen.
Open the windows for fresh air.
Avoid having an empty stomach or very heavy, greasy food.
Consuming ginger (such as ginger tablet or tea) can be beneficial.
Suitable medicines for motion sickness can be taken after consulting a doctor.
