In an escalating war of words ahead of the high-stakes Dharapuram assembly by-election, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) founder C. Joseph Vijay launched a scathing attack on Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Vijay strongly condemned Stalin’s controversial campaign remarks labeling TVK’s Dalit woman candidate, P. Sathyabama, as “Somersault Bhama” (Palti Bama) and “Suitcase Bhama” (Petti Bama), terming the comments an outright display of body-shaming, misogyny, and political vulgarity. The row has triggered widespread political fury across Tamil Nadu, prompting the ruling TVK to formally approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking punitive action against the DMK patriarch.
The Campaign Remark That Triggered the Clash
The controversy erupted during an election rally held in the Dharapuram (SC) constituency, where Stalin was canvassing for DMK nominee S. Suganya. Targeting Sathyabama for switching allegiance from the AIADMK to the ruling TVK, Stalin alleged horse-trading and made remarks questioning how she could perform a political “somersault” with her body type. The derogatory wordplay, mocking both her political transition and physical appearance, drew instant backlash from women’s rights advocates, local activists, and rival political factions who called it an affront to the dignity of women leaders.
‘Obscenity and Malice in DMK’s DNA’: CM Vijay Fires Back
Reacting sharply on social media platform X, Chief Minister Vijay characterized the Dharapuram public meeting organized under Stalin’s leadership as “defamatory and utterly uncivilized”. Vijay stated that the opposition leader took pleasure in ridiculing the physical appearance of a woman candidate rather than engaging on programmatic or developmental issues. “The people of Tamil Nadu have long realized that obscenity, malice, and vulgarity are intertwined in the DMK’s DNA,” Vijay remarked, asserting that party leaders have normalized speaking offensively about women even in their presence. Speaking as “a son, a brother, and a well-wisher to the women of Tamil Nadu,” the Chief Minister warned that voters would deliver a decisive rebuff to such toxic rhetoric at the ballot box.
TVK Ministers Demand Apology and Move Election Commission
The controversy has mobilized the entire TVK state cabinet, with multiple ministers demanding an unconditional public apology from Stalin. Health Minister K.G. Arunraj and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar denounced the comments as a reflection of political desperation, stressing that disparaging a Scheduled Caste woman candidate violates constitutional decorum and the Model Code of Conduct. The TVK legal wing has formally petitioned the Chief Election Commissioner and district electoral authorities, requesting the cancellation of Stalin’s star campaigner status and the registration of an FIR under Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
