News India Live, Digital Desk: A massive explosion in a huge oil refinery in Port Arthur, Texas, America, on Monday evening (local time) has shocked the whole world. The blast in this refinery of Valero Energy was so powerful that people’s houses and windows shook several miles away. Immediately after the incident, a plume of black smoke engulfed the sky, due to which the administration had to hastily issue ‘shelter-in-place’ (order to stay in homes) for the local residents. This blast has happened at a time when there is a war-like situation between America and Iran, due to which the fears of a ‘conspiracy’ behind it have deepened.
Blast intensity and ground report
According to eyewitnesses, a loud echo was heard around 6:30 pm, following which a unit of the refinery burst into flames. Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte M. Moses confirmed that the blast was huge, but added that there were no reports of any injuries so far. About 770 employees of the refinery have been evacuated safely. However, as a precautionary measure, State Highways 82 and 87 have been closed and several fire brigade teams are trying to control the fire.
Has Iran responded? Debate broke out on social media
This blast also made headlines at the international level because recently Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) had announced a change in its strategy to adopt an ‘aggressive stance’. Some IRGC-related accounts on social media are promoting this incident as ‘sabotage’ and a retaliatory action taken by Iran. However, US authorities and Jefferson County Sheriff Jenna Stephens have indicated after initial investigation that the blast was likely caused by a technical fault in an ‘industrial heater’.
Fear of fuel crisis and rising prices
This refinery of Valero is one of the largest refineries in America, with the capacity to process 4.35 lakh barrels of crude oil per day. Amidst the ongoing tension with Iran, this accident has created a stir in the global oil market. Experts believe that if this plant remains closed for a long time, there may be a huge jump in the prices of gas and petrol in international markets including America. There are already clouds of uncertainty looming over oil supplies due to the Iran war.
close watch of security agencies
Even though preliminary investigation is calling it an accident, American intelligence agencies are investigating it from every angle. Especially when Iran has threatened to ‘paralyze America’ if the Trump administration attacks. Environment agencies are also checking the air quality of the area to ensure that the smoke has not spread any poisonous gases. At present the people of Port Arthur are in panic and waiting for the ‘all clear’ signal.
