News India Live, Digital Desk: A major accident was averted on Monday morning in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. A massive fire broke out due to short circuit in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) of Northern Railway (NR) Hospital located in Charbagh. As soon as the fire broke out, there was panic in the hospital and a cloud of smoke filled all around. The patient, attendants and hospital staff started running here and there to save their lives.
It is a matter of relief that there was no loss of life in this incident. All the patients were evacuated safely in time.
Fire broke out due to short circuit in air conditioner
This incident is being reported around 10:30 am on Monday. According to initial information, there was a sudden short circuit in an air conditioner (AC) installed in the ICU ward. The spark that came out of it took the form of fire in no time. The fire spread rapidly and engulfed the entire ICU. The ICU ward was completely filled with flames and smoke, putting the lives of the patients admitted there at risk.
There was chaos, people ran to save their lives
As soon as the news of fire in the ICU spread, there was an atmosphere of chaos in the entire hospital. The staff immediately tried to use fire extinguishing equipment, but the fire had become huge. The first priority was to get the patients out safely. The hospital staff and doctors, showing promptness, started taking out the patients admitted in the ICU. Some patients were pulled to a safe place with the help of bedsheets. Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel also played an important role in this rescue operation.
As soon as information about the incident was received, several fire brigade vehicles reached the spot. After about half an hour of hard work, the firemen completely brought the fire under control.
Major accident averted, investigation ordered
According to railway officials, all the patients are safe and have been shifted to another ward. However, due to the fire, valuable medical equipment, beds and other items worth lakhs of rupees kept in the ICU were burnt to ashes. Railways has constituted a committee to investigate this serious incident. This committee will find out the exact cause of the fire and will also check whether fire safety standards were being followed in the hospital or not.
This incident has once again raised serious questions on the fire safety arrangements in hospitals, especially in sensitive wards like ICU.
