Sanjana’s fear and the birth of ‘Chhaya’

The story starts with the marriage of Surya Dev. He was married to ‘Sanjana’, daughter of Prajapati Daksh. The brightness of the Sun God and his heat were so much that Sanjana was not able to tolerate it. Finally, fed up, he found a way. With his yogic power he created a shadow of himself which he named –‘Shadow’,

Sanjana left Chhaya in her place to serve the Sun God and went to do penance herself. Surya Dev did not even realize that it was not his wife but her shadow who was living with him.

Shani’s birth and that “dark” truth

Time passed and Chaya became pregnant. Since Chhaya was a great devotee of Lord Shiva, she continued to perform penance by standing in the scorching heat even during her pregnancy. This affected the child in the womb. When Shani Dev was born, his complexion was very dark and his body was very weak.

Father’s taunt and son’s anger

This was the moment that created a rift in the relationship. When Surya Dev saw his newborn son, he became furious. He doubted the character of his own wife (who was actually Chhaya). He said, “How can my son be so dark and ugly? I am the light itself. This cannot be my son.”

Just imagine, in front of a son his father refused to accept him and insulted his mother. Little Shani Dev could not tolerate this.

When Shani turned his attention to his father

It is said that Shani Dev had received the powers of giver of good deeds since birth. Shani Dev got angry after hearing his father’s insult to his mother and he angrily glared at Surya Dev. This is Saturn’s “Curve Sight” Or called crooked eyes.

As soon as Shani’s eyes fell on his father, the body of the Sun God, which always shone like gold, turned completely black. All his luster disappeared and he developed leprosy. There was chaos. Surya Dev understood that he had made a big mistake.

Then how did the matter calm down?

Later Lord Shiva intervened and made Surya Dev realize his mistake. Only then did Surya Dev admit his mistake and he got his old form back. He accepted Shani as his son, but the bitterness in his heart never went away completely.

This is the reason why even today in astrology, Sun and Saturn are considered enemies of each other. This story teaches us that whether human or divine, ego and anger can burn relationships forever.
