News India Live, Digital Desk: Dussehra 2025: On the tenth day of Sharad Navratri i.e. Dashami Tithi, the festival of Dussehra is celebrated with great pomp across the country. This year Dussehra is on 2 October 2025, and this festival teaches us that good always wins good over evil. On this special occasion, there is a law of worship of both Maa Durga and Lord Rama. Let’s know two very inspirational stories related to Dussehra which show us the right path in life.
Story of Dussehra associated with Shri Ram
This is about the Treta Yuga, when Lord Rama was at 14 years of exile with his wife Sita and brother Laxman. At the same time, Lankapati Ravana fraudulently kidnapped Mother Sita. Then Lord Rama traced Sita Mata with the help of Pawanputra Hanuman. Many people advised Ravana to return Rama with respect to Mother Sita and apologize to him, but in his ego, Ravana did not listen to anyone. Finally, Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram decided to fight Ravana.
In order to win the war and end evil, Lord Rama worshiped Maa Durga for nine consecutive days from the Pratipada of the Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month to nine consecutive days. After receiving the blessings of Maa Durga, she killed Ravana on Dashami Tithi, which had become a symbol of evil. On this day, good conquered evil, and since then this day was started celebrating as Dussehra or Vijayadashami.
Story of Mahishasura Slaughter
According to another old story, there was a very powerful asura named Mahishasura. He had received such a boon from Brahmaji by doing hard penance that no man or animal could kill him. With this boon, he started thinking of himself as immortal and wondering how a woman can kill her. Coming under this pride, Mahishasura started torturing the three worlds, even he had taken away his heaven from the gods.
When the gods became very upset, they all went to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva to protect their protect. Then the Goddess Shakti Swaroopa Maa Durga was born with the powers of the three gods. Maa Durga fought fiercely from Mahishasura from Shukla Pratipada of Ashwin month to Navami Tithi i.e. for the entire nine days. Finally, on Dashami Tithi, Mother Durga killed Mahishasura and thus ended evil. With the grace of Maa Durga, everything from heaven to earth again became peaceful and organized.
