India’s Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) has released the latest report related to mobile users across the country for January 2025. This report shows that while Airtel and Reliance Jio have added millions of new users on one hand, Vodafone Idea (VI) and BSNL have faced user losses.
Number of mobile users in India crosses 115 crores
The total number of mobile users recorded an increase of 0.55% in January 2025, causing the total number of wireless users in the country to exceed 115.06 crore.
For the first time in this report, 5G users have also been included in the mobile category, whereas earlier they were counted in the category of fixed wireline users.
Airtel became the fastest growing network
-
Airtel added 16.5 lakh new customers in January and further strengthened its grip.
-
At the same time, Reliance Jio also connected 6.8 lakh new users to its network.
-
It is a clear indication that most people are giving priority to Airtel and Jio.
Vodafone idea and heavy loss to BSNL
-
VI (Vodafone Idea) has lost 1.3 million users this month.
-
The situation of BSNL was also not good, it has lost 1.5 lakh users.
Jio becomes country’s number one network
-
The total user number of Reliance Jio has now reached 46.58 crores, which has reached 40.46% its market share.
-
Airtel now has 38.69 crore customers and has a market share of 33.61%.
VI and BSNL falling condition
-
The user number of Vodafone IDEA has now come down to 20.59 crore and its market share has increased to 17.89%.
-
BSNL now has only 9.15 crore customers left and its market share has fallen to 7.95%.
91.96% users now with private telecom companies
It is also clear from the TRAI report that 91.96% of mobile users in India are now connected to private telecom companies (Jio, Airtel etc.).
This shows that public confidence is now more on private operators than government networks.
