News India Live, Digital Desk: SIM Card Rules : The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has taken major action against Bharti Airtel, one of the leading telecom companies of the country. The company has been fined for not properly following the rules related to customer verification. This case is of Bihar Circle, where the company ignored the rules while adding new customers.
After all, what mistake did Airtel make?
Whenever a telecom company issues a SIM card to a new customer, it has to follow certain rules made by the government. The most important rule in this is ‘Subscriber Verification’, i.e. verifying the identity of the subscriber properly. For this, Aadhar Card, Voter ID or any other government identity card is taken from the customer and it is thoroughly checked.
When the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) audited the functioning of Airtel in Bihar circle in December 2023, it found that the company had violated these rules in some cases. That is, while giving SIM cards to some customers, their identity was not verified properly.
How much was the fine?
Telecom Department has sued Airtel for this violation of rules. ₹1,79,000 A fine of Rs. Although, considering the size of the company, this amount is not very big, but it gives a big message about how strict the government is regarding the rules related to customer safety.
Why is this rule so important?
Correct verification of customer identity is not just a paperwork, but it is also an important aspect related to the security of the country. If a SIM card is given to someone on a wrong or fake identity card, it can be used for fraud, scam or other illegal activities.
Therefore, the Department of Telecommunications directs all companies to strictly follow these rules. This fine imposed on Airtel is a warning to other companies also that they should be very careful while acquiring customers, otherwise they may also have to face similar action.
