Ending days of intense political suspense on the final day of nominations, Samajwadi Party (SP) national president Akhilesh Yadav declared that his party will not field a third candidate in the biennial Rajya Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh. In a post shared on X, Yadav stated, “Now, our focus is not on three, but on 403,” making it clear that the party has chosen to conserve its organizational energy and numbers for the full 403-member Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly ahead of the 2027 state elections rather than forcing an uphill arithmetic contest.
Assembly Math Preempts High-Risk Floor Fight
The strategic retreat follows a detailed audit of floor numbers inside the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha. In the 403-member assembly, the SP-Congress alliance commands 103 legislators, including 101 from the Samajwadi Party and 2 from the Congress. With each Rajya Sabha seat requiring approximately 37 first-preference votes, the SP coalition possessed surplus votes after comfortably securing two seats for senior party leader Ram Gopal Yadav and industrial executive Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani. However, pushing for a third victory would have required cross-voting or outside support from over a dozen lawmakers, creating a high vulnerability to internal cross-voting given the BJP-led alliance’s dominant strength of 288 seats.
Unopposed Path Cleared for 10 Rajya Sabha Candidates
The decision to step back from fielding a third nominee effectively paves the way for all 10 candidates in the fray to win unopposed, avoiding a high-stakes polling day on October 16. The Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded eight official candidates, deliberately presenting a balanced slate of caste and regional representations. While ruling party leaders quickly labeled the move as an early political concession, the Samajwadi Party camp emphasized that avoiding factional horse-trading prevents unforced tactical errors and keeps the broader opposition bloc cohesive.
Shifting the Narrative Toward Mission 2027
By explicitly referencing the number “403,” Akhilesh Yadav has redirected the opposition’s narrative from short-term legislative maneuvers directly toward grassroots mobilization for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. Party insiders indicate that the leadership aims to prevent unnecessary friction within its legislative ranks, focusing instead on consolidating its PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) social coalition across eastern and western Uttar Pradesh constituencies over the next two years.
