News India Live, Digital Desk: The eyes of the whole world are on whatever is happening in Iran these days. People are out on the streets there, slogans are being raised against their own government and the Supreme Leader. And whenever such an uproar happens anywhere in the world, everyone’s eyes first fall on one person, America’s President Donald Trump.
We all know that America has always been the “contractor of democracy” all over the world. Be it Iraq, Afghanistan or any other country, the rote answer of American Presidents was “We will bring democracy there.” But this time what Donald Trump has said has surprised even the best political pundits.
The question was simple, but the answer was crooked.
What happened was that during a recent interview, when Donald Trump was asked a question on the current situation in Iran, he fully supported the people of Iran. He believed that the people there were very brave and that they deserved a good life.
But, the real twist came when the reporter asked him a direct question: “Do you want Iran to become a democracy?”
Usually any American leader would immediately say—”Yes, of course.” But Trump took a pause here and what he said was quite interesting. He said, “I don’t know whether I would use this word (democracy) or not.”
Yes, you read it right. He refrained from advocating democracy in clear words. He said, “I just want them (the Iranian people) to be happy, for their country to be successful and for them to have good opportunities.”
After all, what does Trump mean?
Now you must be wondering why the President of a country like America, which is the flag bearer of democracy, is saying this? To understand this we have to go a little deeper.
In fact, Donald Trump has been very against the old American policy of “Regime Change” i.e. forcefully overthrowing the power of a country. They feel that whenever America has entered a country and tried to impose democracy by force (like in Iraq), the situation there has worsened instead of improving.
This statement of Trump indicates that he does not want to get directly involved in the Iran issue. They want that whatever change happens there, it should be brought by the people there themselves, not America. Trump is focused on only one thing – Iran should not have nuclear weapons and it should not become a threat to America. How they run their country is their headache.
What is the message for Iranians?
This statement may be a bit confusing for the people protesting on the streets of Iran. On one hand Trump is saying that “I am with you”, but on the other hand he is not promising that America will form a democratic government there.
Experts believe that this is a systematic move by Trump. They are giving this message to the rulers of Iran that “We are not coming to topple your power, but if you play with our interests, we will not leave you either.”
Overall, Donald Trump has made it clear that his America will not interfere everywhere by becoming the “police of the world”, but will intervene only where it deems it necessary for its benefit or its security.
