The common man is facing the brunt of inflation. Now the pockets of those traveling on highways will be lighter. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has increased toll rates across the country. NHAI has decided to increase toll rates by 5 percent. Now highway travelers will have to pay more fare from Monday.

The increased toll tax rates came into effect on national highways from 12 midnight on Sunday. The list of increased rates has been pasted at all toll plazas. The toll has been increased by Rs 5. Along with this, there has been a slight increase in the monthly pass as well. Let us tell you that the annual revision of the highway user fee was to be implemented from April 1. But this increase was postponed due to the Lok Sabha elections. The annual revision is likely to be in the range of an average of five percent.

“The new user charges will come into effect from June 3, 2024,” a senior NHAI official said on Sunday. The change in toll charges is part of the annual process of revising rates linked to changes in Wholesale Price Index (CPI)-based inflation. There are about 855 user fee plazas on the national highway network at which user fee is levied as per the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008.

Toll tax is a fee that drivers have to pay while crossing certain interstate expressways, national and state highways. These come under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). However, two-wheeler riders are exempted from paying toll fees.
