But this time the issue of ‘Census’ is quite serious. The buzz of census had just started in the country when Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has made a claim which has created a stir in the political circles.
Akhilesh Yadav says that in the latest census notification that has come from the government, only the ‘caste’ column is missing. This may sound like a technical thing, but Akhilesh has turned it into a big political weapon. His direct allegation is that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again been exposed.
Akhilesh and the opposition have been demanding for a long time that there should be a ‘caste based census’ in the country. His logic is clear, if we do not know how many people belong to which society, then how will the government implement the right schemes and reservations for their welfare? But when Akhilesh did not see the caste column in this new notification, he termed it as the ‘old mentality’ of BJP.
Akhilesh believes that this is a deliberate attempt to attack the rights of the backward, Dalit and exploited society. He said in clear words that if there is no caste in the data, then how will we know who will get the rights and how much?
At the same time, there is a lot of discussion among the people on this issue. People are now debating whether this important part of their identity will remain out of the data even in this era of digital census? For now, Akhilesh has put the ball in the government’s court. Now it remains to be seen whether the government gives any clarification on this or in the coming days this genie of ‘caste census’ will again take the form of a big movement on the streets of UP.
