Many mantras and hymns are mentioned in Hinduism to please Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, but the place of ‘Kanakadhara Stotra’ is considered to be the highest among them.

It is believed that by reciting this hymn or listening to it, poverty and misfortune are removed from the life of a person and the immense grace of Goddess Lakshmi starts pouring it.

How did this miraculous hymn compose?

‘Kanakadhara’ means ‘gold stream’ or ‘gold rain’. A very beautiful and inspirational story is associated with the creation of this hymn. It is said that once the great philosopher and saint Adi Shankaracharya went to a village to ask for alms. He stopped in front of a hut, in which a very poor and old woman lived. There was nothing to eat in his house, except a dried amla.

The woman hesitantly gave the same dry amla etc. to Shankaracharya in alms. Seeing such generosity and selfless sense of that poor woman, Shankaracharya’s heart was filled. At the same time, he meditated on Maa Lakshmi and composed 21 shlokas in her praise.

It is said that Maa Lakshmi was so happy with Shankaracharya’s prayer that she rained the gold stars on the hut of that poor woman. Since then, this hymn became famous as ‘Kanakadhara Stotra’.

How to read this?

Some simple rules should be followed to recite Kanakadhara Stotra:

• Friday is dedicated to Maa Lakshmi, so reciting it is considered to be the best.
• Taking a bath, wearing clean clothes and sitting in front of the picture of Mother Lakshmi.
• Offer them lotus flowers, white sweets and perfumes.
• After this, recite Kanakadhara Stotra with full devotion and faith.
• If you cannot recite in Sanskrit, you can also read its Hindi translation or listen to it.
