Due to cold and lack of moisture, our hands start cracking, sometimes it becomes so painful that the skin cracks and starts bleeding. In such a situation, we need to take special care of our hands. Don’t panic, by adopting some easy methods and home remedies you can keep your hands soft and healthy even in winter.

Let us know some effective ways to get rid of cracked hands in winter:

  1. Drink plenty of water (it is very important to stay hydrated from within):
    • Skin health does not only depend on the products applied externally, but how hydrated we are from within also matters a lot. Even though we feel less thirsty in winter, it is very important to drink adequate amount of water. It keeps the body hydrated from inside, due to which the skin remains moist from inside and the problem of cracks is reduced.
  2. Use only lukewarm water (avoid hot water):
    • Bathing or washing hands with very hot water strips the skin of its natural moisture and oils. Due to this the skin becomes more dry and starts cracking. Therefore always use lukewarm water only.
    • After washing hands, dry them gently with a soft towel, never rub. Avoid complete drying, it is better if some moisture remains.
  3. Regular use of moisturizer:
    • Immediately after bathing or washing hands, apply a good, thick hand cream, moisturizer or petroleum jelly on your hands. When hands are slightly moist, the moisturizer absorbs well into the skin and locks the moisture.
    • Especially before sleeping at night, apply thick moisturizer and massage your hands and if possible, wear thin cotton gloves. This will nourish the hands throughout the night and they will remain soft till morning.
  4. The wonder of natural oils (coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil):
    • Coconut oil, olive oil or almond oil are no less than a boon for cracked hands. They contain natural moisture and nutrients, which help heal and soften the skin.
    • Before sleeping at night, lukewarm these oils and massage them thoroughly on your hands. It will give deep nourishment to the skin and help in healing the cracked skin.
  5. Protect hands from cold (use gloves):
    • Be sure to use gloves when going out in winter, or while doing household work like washing utensils or gardening. Gloves protect hands from direct contact with cold air and water, preventing them from becoming dry and cracked. Wearing woolen or cotton gloves protects the hands from cold and maintains their moisture.

By adopting these small but effective methods, you can keep your hands healthy, soft and beautiful even in winter!
