New Delhi/Lucknow. If you also take traffic rules lightly while driving on the road, then be careful now. To curb road accidents and stop unruly driving, the government has implemented new and very strict rules (New Traffic Rules 2026). According to the amended motor vehicle rules, repeat offenders will no longer be in trouble. Now just paying the fine will not suffice, but one small carelessness on your part can take away your driving license (DL) forever.
‘5 mistakes and game over’: license will be suspended
The biggest change under the new rules has been made regarding the counting of violations. According to this rule which came into effect from January 1, 2026, if a driver within a calendar year 5 or more times If someone is caught breaking traffic rules, the transport department will suspend his driving license. This step has been taken for those ‘habitual offenders’ who do not improve their driving style even after paying the challan.
Which 24 mistakes will be punished?
The government has currently included 24 types of traffic violations in this ‘blacklist’ category. Some of the major violations are:
Riding a two-wheeler without a helmet or driving a car without a seat belt.
Jumping red light.
Overspeeding (driving faster than the prescribed speed).
Use of mobile phone while driving.
Driving on the wrong side.
Repeating these seemingly small mistakes again and again can prove costly.
A matter of relief: Old records will not come in the way
A big relief for drivers is that records from previous years (2025 or earlier) will not be added to this ‘5 times’ count. The counting of records will start afresh from January 1 every year. This means that if someone has made mistakes in the past, but is now following the rules, then he does not need to be afraid.
Will be given time to clean up before taking action
The process of suspending the license has been kept completely transparent. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) will not cancel the license directly. Before taking action, a notice will be sent to the concerned driver and he will be given full opportunity to express his views. The officers will decide for how long the license is to be suspended only after hearing the driver’s record and the arguments given.
Difficult to avoid e-challan
Now with the help of modern technology and CCTV cameras, issuing E-Challan has become very easy. The Transport Department will now use the data of the e-challan arriving at your home directly for license suspension. The District Transport Office will have the authority to take legal action against negligent drivers. Road safety experts believe that this strictness is expected to reduce road accidents by 30%.
