News India Live, Digital Desk: There are many of us who have old phones or who travel abroad. What do we often do? They remove the SIM card from the phone or do not recharge it, but continue chatting and calling on WhatsApp by connecting to home Wi-Fi. If you do the same, then this news may upset you a bit.

The government and telecom companies (like Jio, Airtel and Vi) are now considering a rule that will completely change the way you run WhatsApp. This ‘SIM Binding’ It is being said.

In simple language: What is this ‘SIM binding’?

To understand this rule, take the example of your banking apps (like PhonePe, Paytm or Google Pay). Have you noticed that these apps work only if your phone has a SIM card that is linked to the bank? If you remove the SIM, these apps stop working.

Now there is a demand to impose the same rule on apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal. This means that:

  1. WhatsApp will run only on the device in which its SIM card is installed.
  2. of sim card active It may also be necessary to recharge (i.e. recharge).

Why do Jio and Airtel want this?
Our Indian telecom companies are strongly supporting this demand. He argues that this is very important to prevent cyber fraud. What fraudsters do these days – they create a WhatsApp account with a fake SIM, then throw away the SIM and keep cheating people through Wi-Fi. It becomes impossible for the police to track such people because there is no SIM in the phone.
Telecom companies say that if ‘SIM binding’ is implemented, such fake accounts will be automatically closed.

But why is there protest? (BIF’s argument)
Every coin has two sides. ‘Broadband India Forum’ (BIF), which represents technology companies, has strongly opposed it. He says that this rule will become a problem for the general public, especially the poor.

  • Attack on the poor: There are many people who are not able to recharge their SIM every month and manage by asking for Wi-Fi or hotspot. His WhatsApp will stop.
  • Freedom will be taken away: We run WhatsApp even on laptops, tablets or desktops where there is no SIM. Will that also be closed?
  • Technical problem: This system is very complex to set up and can slow down apps.

What does this mean for the common user (you)?
Right now the government has not given any final approval on this, only discussion is going on. But if this rule applies, then:

  • You will always have to keep your SIM recharged.
  • The SIM card has to be kept inserted in the phone, it cannot be removed and kept in the cupboard.
  • The trick of running WhatsApp with ‘fake numbers’ will no longer work.
