Strong letter written to DM
Bihar Women’s Commission Chairperson Ashwamedh Devi has written a letter to the District Magistrate (DM) of Patna. In this letter, he has clearly demanded that a thorough investigation should be done into the facilities provided to girls in private hostels and government lodges of the city. He has asked for a detailed report from the DM as to what is the condition of girls in these places.

What are the things that the Commission is unhappy with?
The Chairman believes that just providing a roof is not enough. The Commission has mainly emphasized on four things:

  1. Security: Is there proper arrangement for CCTV and guards?
  2. Clean Drinking Water: Are girls getting pure drinking water or not?
  3. Food Quality: How healthy is the food served in hostel mess?
  4. Hygiene: Is the condition of the living room and washroom really fit for use?

Tension of hostel owners may increase
There are many such private hostels running in Patna which charge huge rent, but nothing special is available there in the name of facilities. With this initiative of the Women’s Commission, the noose can now be tightened on those hostel owners who ignore the standards of safety and cleanliness. The Commission believes that our daughters are working hard while staying away from home, hence it is the responsibility of the administration to provide them a safe and healthy environment like home.

What will happen next?
The Commission has expressed hope from the DM that he should form a special team and conduct a surprise inspection of these places. Now it remains to be seen what truth comes out in this investigation. If deficiencies are found, then strict action can definitely be taken against these hostels.
