In today’s digital age, PAN Card has become one of the most important documents. It is required everywhere, from opening a bank account to filing income tax returns and carrying out large financial transactions. But a small carelessness related to PAN card can now cost you dearly. The government has made the rules regarding keeping duplicate PAN cards very strict, which will be fully implemented from January 1, 2026. If you also have more than one PAN card, then this news is for you.
What is duplicate PAN card and why is it a big mistake?
It is often seen that when a person’s PAN card is lost or damaged, he applies for a new PAN card due to lack of information. This is where the biggest mistake occurs. As per Income Tax Department rules, only one PAN number can be allotted in the name of an individual. If your card is lost, then instead of getting a new card made, you have to get the same PAN number reprinted. When you apply for a new card, you are issued a second PAN number and you end up with two PAN cards, which is illegal.
Heavy fine and jail will be imposed under the new rule
To stop the growing problem of duplicate PAN cards, the government has made strict provisions under Section 272B of the Income Tax Act, 1961. According to the new and strict rules:
- If a person is found to have more than one PAN card, then Heavy fine of ₹10,000 Can be applied.
- Not only this, the officers are taking this crime seriously. Jail sentence up to three months Can also make provision for.
This rule will equally apply to those people who have made a second PAN card unknowingly or by mistake. Irrespective of your intentions, holding two PAN cards will be considered a legal offense.
How to avoid fines and jail? do this work immediately
If you have got two PAN cards by mistake, then there is no need to panic. You can avoid legal action.
- Surrender immediately: You should surrender your second (duplicate) PAN card to the Income Tax Department as soon as possible. This process can be completed online or by visiting your nearest tax office.
- Reprint if card is lost: If your PAN card is lost in future, never apply for a new one. Always choose the option of “Reprint of PAN Card” so that you can get another card with the same PAN number.
Vigilance is your best protection. This step of the government is to bring transparency in the financial system and prevent fraud. Therefore, ensure that you have only one PAN card. Remember, the ‘one person, one PAN’ rule is for your own financial security.
