The house of Askar Ali, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Minority Front, was set on fire in Lilong area of Thobal district of Manipur on Sunday night. Earlier on Sunday, there were demonstrations against the Waqf Amendment Act in several parts of the Imphal Valley. A rally of about five thousand people was organized in Lilong, which disrupted traffic on National Highway 102. The anger of the protesters was on Ali’s statement in which he supported the bill and criticized the protesting people.

According to eyewitnesses, when the staff of Manipur fire service arrived to extinguish the fire, they were stopped by the protesters. The policemen present on the spot also could not control the situation. The mob expressed displeasure over Ali’s remarks and carried out the incident of setting fire in the house.

In the video released on social media, Askar Ali said, “I recently posted some posts on social media about the Waqf Bill passed in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. I apologize to the Muslim community and Meetai Pangal community of Manipur. Now I urge the government to withdraw this law.”
