Mumbai: In Palghar, many lives were saved due to the promptness and quick decision-making of a 12-year-old brother and a 9-year-old sister. When a high-tension electric wire broke and fell on the gate of a neighbour's house, many lives were saved by warning the Tania siblings, who were studying electricity in science, to stay away from the gate. Appreciating the punctuality of the children, the collector felicitated both of them.

Smit Bhandare (age 12) and his younger sister Sankshatri (age 9) living in Rushabh Apartments in Palghar were doing their homework at home on the afternoon of 25 August when there was a loud explosion. When the two children went to the balcony and looked, a high tension power wire had broken and fallen on the gate of the adjacent 'Vasant Vihar' building. It did not take long for Smit, who had studied science, to understand that the iron gate would also have started conducting electricity after coming in contact with the broken wire. In such a situation, if someone touches the gate, a strong electric current will be felt. Heavy rain started in the middle of the day, so the danger increased.

To ensure that no one accidentally touches the electric wire, Tania and her siblings started shouting from the balcony to warn people. Then the neighbour's ten-year-old son Mohammad Ansari reached the gate and he was warned to stay away from the gate. After a while, a courier boy came and he was also warned to stay away from the gate. Both the siblings were standing on the balcony and shouting continuously and telling the passersby to stay away from the gate.

Meanwhile, Smit and Santra's father called the electricity company (MMEDCL) office and informed them about the broken wire. The electricity company workers arrived immediately and switched off the power supply. Thus, due to the punctuality, intelligence and alertness of the children, many lives were saved.

Smile and Culture Collector Govind Bodke and police officials felicitated him at an event held in Palghar yesterday.
