A special CBI court acquitted former Justice Nirmal Yadav in the famous “Cash at Darwaza”. The case is of 2008, when he was accused of demanding a bribe of Rs 15 lakh while being a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court of Special CBI Judge Alka Malik on Saturday gave its verdict and freed four other accused, including Nirmal Yadav, from the allegations. There were a total of five accused in this case, one of whom had already died.

How did the matter be revealed?

The matter came to light in 2008 due to a unique incident. A packet filled with notes suddenly reached the door of the house of the High Court Justice Nirmaljit Kaur, who had become a judge just 33 days ago. He was not aware of the incident, so he immediately informed the police. When the investigation proceeded, the bribery case was exposed and later retired Justice Nirmal Yadav was also accused. A case was registered against Yadav and the then Additional Advocate General of Haryana Sanjeev Bansal, although Bansal died a few years later.

17 years of legal battle lasted

During the hearing of the case, many judges changed and statements of a total of 89 witnesses were recorded. Statements were recorded by calling 12 witnesses again. The court found that the main witnesses turned away from their earlier statements and made different statements, which weakened the case. Also, the CBI could not present solid digital or documentary evidence.

final call

On 29 March 2025, the Special CBI court said in its judgment that the prosecution failed to submit sufficient evidence to prove the allegations. Due to this, the court declared the four accused including former Justice Nirmal Yadav to be convicted.
