The controversy over digital sensorship between the social media platform X (East Twitter) and the Government of India has now reached the Karnataka High Court. The central government has dismissed the allegations of X in the affidavit filed in the court and said that X has tried to create confusion by incorrectly calling the ‘Cooperation Port’ as ‘censorship portal’.
What are the allegations of X?
The X recently filed a case against the central government in the Karnataka High Court. The X alleges that the government is misusing Section 69 (A) of the IT Act and blocking online content without adopting appropriate procedure. The X claims that this is affecting independence of expression on digital platforms.
The main charge of X is on the ‘Sahyog Portal’, which the government has created for coordination between social media companies and government agencies. The X says that the government is blocking the content directly through this portal, which is against the provisions of IT law.
Government cleaning
The central government dismissed the X allegations of X in its affidavit and said that,
-
The X incorrectly trying to connect its business interests with the rights of users.
-
The purpose of the ‘Cooperation Portal’ is to maintain security and transparency on the digital platform, calling it a ‘censorship portal’ is a misleading step.
-
The government says, “Global social media company like X should avoid using such misleading language.”
Freedom vs. digital regulation of expression
This dispute is associated with freedom of expression and digital regulation.
-
X’s argument: The government is highly controlling online content.
-
Government’s argument: It is taking necessary steps to make digital space safe and responsible.
The hearing of the case in the Karnataka High Court will further decide how to establish a balance between digital sensorship and online independence.
