New Delhi: The court has given four weeks to the central government to take a decision on Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship. Although the Center sought eight weeks, the court gave it only four weeks. In the petition, the petitioner has argued that he has all the documents to prove Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship. He has all the documents and emails of the British government which prove that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. Therefore, he is disqualified to contest elections. Therefore, he cannot be a member of the Lok Sabha.
The next hearing in Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship case will be held on 21 April. On 1 July 2024, Karnataka’s lawyer and BJP member S Vignesh Shishir filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court alleging that Rahul Gandhi is British. The petitioner alleged this in 2022 citing a private email from the British government.
Vignesh Shishir had demanded Rahul Gandhi’s cancellation of Indian citizenship citing Section 9 (2) of the Indian Citizenship Act, 1955. The petition demanded the cancellation of Rahul Gandhi’s election from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat this year due to hiding British citizenship.
The petitioner argued that he has all the documents and some emails of the British government that prove that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. For this reason, he is unqualified to contest elections in India. The petitioner also said that he had sent a complaint twice to the competent authority regarding Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship, but the current petition has been filed for no action.
The petition also states that Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship is an offense under the Indian Penal Code and the Indian Passport Act. Therefore, the CBI should be ordered to investigate this case and investigate.
