The students’ protest against the amendment in the PhD admission rules at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) finally bore fruit. The University Admission Coordination Board has made changes accepting the demands of the students. Now all the candidates will be called on every seat in Rate (PhD Qualified) category. They will be selected from the merit list based on interview and NET marks. To give more opportunity to the students, BHU has extended the last date of PhD admission application till January 25.

Students’ protest and demands:

Students had protested for six days in BHU demanding amendment in the PhD admission rules. After this, after talking to BHU officials including the acting Vice Chancellor, the students ended their protest. Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Sanjay Kumar had formed a committee on the demand of the students. On Wednesday, the committee’s report was approved by the University Admission Coordination Board. Now all the candidates on rate category seats will get a chance for interview, which was the biggest demand of the students. Earlier it was decided to call five students on one seat, which was increased to ten, but the students were not satisfied with this change. However, the board has implemented this decision only for this year.

Next step:

The Board has adopted a positive stance on the demand of students to conduct examination twice a year in the PhD admission process. The final decision on this can be taken in the Academic Council. The board has proposed to send it again to the Academic Council. At the same time, the Academic Council had decided to conduct the PhD admission process once in the first year.

Application date extended:

A day earlier, BHU had extended the last date of application for June-2024 PhD admission. Now applications can be made till January 25, 2025, whereas earlier this date was January 21. Apart from this, a new arrangement has been made to make minor corrections in the application on 27th and 28th January. However, no change has been made in the remaining dates. Till Tuesday, 7000 candidates had applied for PhD admission. BHU had issued a bulletin for admission to 1540 seats for PhD.
