In today’s fast changing world, the brightness of degrees is fading. Now it is not a guarantee of a career just a degree. A new report has revealed that 83% of engineering graduates and 46% business graduates are neither getting jobs nor an internship opportunity. Companies are now giving importance to their skills and practical knowledge than the educational qualifications of the candidates.
Now skills will be identified
According to the report, 73% of the recruiters are now focusing on the skills with the candidates, not just their degree. The direct benefit of this is getting to those youths who are willing to learn new things, are focusing on Apscilling and are constantly improving their skills.
This trend means clear – if there is skills, then there is a job. Be it digital marketing, coding, designing or data analytics – which are fast growing sectors.
Genz’s new trend: Freelancing and Side Hussels
Genz professionals do not want to be limited to jobs just. They need both financial freedom and flexibility. That is why 51% of Genz youth are freelancing for extra income – some are writing content, some graphic designing, and some are serving clients through coding.
A major reason for this is – more than the salary of the month, the confidence to earn from skills.
Gender pay gap still a matter of concern
Although there are many changes in the professional world, the gap on gender is still a reality. According to the report, one in every two women professionals are getting a package of less than 6 lakhs annually, while male colleagues are taking more salary than this.
This difference shows that even if women bring the same hard work and skills, they are not being given equal salary – which is a challenge for the workplace equality.
Changing thinking about workplace culture
Genz is not only changing the way of working, but the workplace expectations are also new. 77% of the youth want their performance review once a month or the project-based, not once a year. They want professional growth to be constantly measured and the feedback system is more transparent.
This thinking is a warning for traditional companies that if they want to maintain talent, they will have to change their work culture.
First choice made of tech companies
Technology still remains the first choice of youth. Especially companies like Google, Microsoft and Amazon are still top dream employees for engineering graduates. The work culture, growth optimity and innovative atmosphere of these companies attract Genz.
What should the youth do?
It is clear from this report that there is now the era of skill-based hiring. In such a situation, it is important that youth:
- Update your skillset continuously
- Understand the demand of the industry and adapt yourself accordingly
- Make your career direction with freelancing, side projects, startup experiments
- And most important – don’t forget networking and personal branding
Now it is not just about getting a job, the career is to make itself.
