Top Diwali 2025 date: When we talk about the great festival of Diwali, the twinkling of lamps, sweetness of sweets and the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi come to our mind. But just a day before the night of Diwali, another very special day is celebrated – Chhoti Diwali.
This day falls just next day of Dhanteras and a day before Diwali. From this day itself, the real glow starts in the houses – houses are decorated, rangolis are made and every corner starts glowing with the light of lamps. But the most special and important tradition of this day is to light a lamp in the name of Yamraj outside the house.
It is said that lighting a lamp at the door of the house facing south in the evening eliminates the fear of ‘Akal Mrityu’ i.e. premature death and brings blessings of Yamraj, the god of death.
But why was it named ‘Narak’ Chaturdashi?
This name may sound a bit strange, but there is a very big and brave story hidden behind it, which is the biggest example of the victory of good over evil.
According to mythology, there was a very cruel and powerful demon named Narakasura. He was so cruel that both gods and humans trembled at his name. With the help of his power, he defeated the gods and looted their treasures and committed the biggest sin of taking 16,000 women captive.
When the pot of his sins was filled, all the gods reached out to Lord Shri Krishna for help. Lord Krishna along with his wife Satyabhama went to fight Narakasura. After a fierce fight, Shri Krishna beheaded Narakasura with his Sudarshan Chakra.
After this, he freed all 16,000 women from the captivity of that demon and married them to honor him. To commemorate this victory, and to symbolize the end of Narakasura, this day is called Naraka Chaturdashi.
This day is not just for lighting lamps, but also for remembering that no matter how dense the darkness is, a single ray of light is enough to end it.
