News India Live, Digital Desk: The month of Magh is going on and amidst the harsh cold, the atmosphere of devotion is also warm. In our Hindu religion, there are many Amavasyas throughout the year, but ‘Mauni Amavasya’ (Mauni Amavasya) is something else altogether. It is considered to be the biggest and most influential Amavasya of the year.

As is clear from the name itself, ‘Mauni’ means ‘silent’. This is the day when it is said that if you stop your speech, that is, remain silent, then you can get virtue equal to performing several thousand yagyas. Today we will talk in simple words about when this auspicious day is falling in 2026 and how you have to take advantage of it.

When is Mauni Amavasya? (date and time)

Often there is some confusion regarding the dates of festivals. According to the Panchang, this year Amavasya of Magh month i.e. Mauni Amavasya 18 January 2026 (Sunday) is being celebrated.
Sunday and on top of that it is Amavasya, it is considered a very special coincidence for the worship of ‘Sun God’ and ancestors.

Importance of bathing and donating: What if one cannot go to Ganga?

We all know that on this day there is a rush of people to take a dip in Sangam (Prayagraj) or Ganga. It is believed that on this day Ganga water is like nectar. But many of us are not able to go to the banks of Ganga due to work. Then what should we do?

There is no need to be disappointed. Our elders say that if the mind is healed then the Ganga is in trouble. At home, mix some Ganga water (if available) and some black sesame seeds in the bathing water. Before sunrise, take bath with this water and chant Har-Har Ganga in your mind. You will get the same virtue as a pilgrimage bath.

Why should one remain ‘silent’? (importance of silence)

Now coming to the most interesting part – the vow of silence. It is said that we spend most of our energy in speaking. Mauni Amavasya comes to remind us that sometimes it is important to talk to ourselves even in silence.

It is not necessary that you do not speak a word the whole day (if you can, it is great). But at least take a resolution that on this day you will not speak bitterly to anyone, will not lie and will not speak ill of anyone. This ‘mental silence’ will also give you amazing peace.

These small measures will improve your life

  1. Please the ancestors: Amavasya day is the day of our ancestors. After bathing, offer Arghya to the Sun and offer some water and sesame seeds in the name of your ancestors.
  2. Donation of warm clothes: Since it is very cold, donate blankets or woolen clothes to someone in need. It is said that donation of sesame and blanket in Magh never goes waste.

So friends, get ready this Sunday (January 18), to purify your body and mind. Keep a little silence, and notice how good you feel from within. Best wishes to all of you on Mauni Amavasya!
