Delhi Metro green energy project: Delhi Metro, which takes lakhs of people to their destination every day, is no longer just a means of transport, but is going to take a big step towards saving the environment. DMRC has made such an announcement, due to which Delhi Metro will create a new history in the country. This project will be the first of its kind in India, which will directly make our and your journey more eco-friendly.

What is this new mission of DMRC?

Delhi Metro has always been known for its punctuality and cleanliness, but now it is taking its fight against pollution to a new level. Metro is already using solar energy, but now it has completely opened its doors to renewable energy.

For this, DMRC is looking for a solar energy developer who can install a solar plant and battery storage system (BESS) anywhere in the country. Delhi Metro will get 500 million units of electricity every year from this plant. In simple language, the Metro will now meet a large part of its electricity requirement directly from sunlight.

Big step in meeting the need of electricity

DMRC said that its aim has always been to provide a clean and environment-friendly transport experience to the passengers. As of now, the Metro meets about 33% of its electricity needs from renewable energy. This includes about 350 million units of electricity generated from Rewa Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh and 40 million units of electricity generated from solar panels installed on the roofs of metro stations and depots.

Interestingly, during the day time when the metro runs the most, about 65% of its electricity requirement is met by this green energy.

Why is it so special?

After the completion of this new project, Delhi Metro will meet more than 60% of its total electricity requirement from renewable energy. DMRC will become the first metro rail project in India to do so. This will not only help in reducing Delhi’s pollution, but will also make a major contribution in meeting India’s environmental protection goals.

This project is targeted to be completed in the next 15 months and under this there will be an agreement to purchase power for 25 years. The move is also a part of the Indian government’s “Panchamrit” strategy, which was announced at COP-26 to fight climate change.
