BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court to cancel the Indian citizenship of Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

Swami has said in the petition that the court should order the Union Home Ministry to dismiss Rahul Gandhi's petition. When the court asked to treat Swami's petition as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), Swami replied that the court can hear it as it deems fit. This is a matter related to the Government of India, I am not making any application due to my personal benefit. The complaint sent by me to the Home Ministry has been accepted and a reply has been sought from Rahul Gandhi. However, there has been no progress in the matter nor has he been given any information.

Rahul Gandhi accused of being a British citizen

The petition filed by lawyer Satya Sabharwal states that a letter was written to the Union Home Ministry on 6 August 2019. In which it was told that Rahul Gandhi has told the British government that he is a British citizen. He has violated Article 9 of the Constitution and the Indian Citizenship Act by becoming an Indian citizen. Therefore, he cannot be considered an Indian citizen now. Despite repeated reports to the Home Ministry, no action was taken.
