Tech Desk. UPI (Unified Payments Interface), which has become the lifeline of digital payments in India, is now going to be seen in a new avatar from 2026. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the government have announced major changes in the rules in view of the increasing digital transactions and fraud cases. These new rules will have a direct impact on crores of Indians using apps like Paytm, PhonePe and Google Pay.
The main objective of these changes is to make digital transactions more secure, faster and transparent than before, so that complaints of transaction failure and fraud can be rooted out.
1. ‘Surgical strike’ on fraud: Extra verification on large payments
Safety has been kept at the top in the rules of 2026. Now users may have to face ‘Additional Factor Authentication’ (AFA) on large amount transactions.
Smart Alert: If you are making a large payment to a suspicious or new merchant, the app will give you a ‘Smart Alert’.
Control on fake links: The system will now identify suspicious accounts in real-time to prevent fraud through fraudulent calls and fake QR codes.
2. If the transaction fails, you will get a clear answer immediately
Often users are worried that the money has been deducted but the recipient has not received it.
Clear Status: Now the apps will have to clearly state whether the money is stuck at the bank level or NPCI level.
Fast Refund: Refunds for failed transactions will now be credited back to your account faster than ever. This will eliminate the hassle of making the same payment again and again.
3. Now you have control over auto-pay and limit
Under the new rules, users will get more control over their accounts than before.
Daily Limit Management: You will be able to decide yourself the maximum amount that can be withdrawn from your UPI in a day.
Manage Auto-Pay: It will now be very easy to stop or make changes to ‘auto-pay’ for OTT subscription or bills. No unwanted debits will occur without your final confirmation.
4. Good news for small shopkeepers and traders
The infrastructure has been upgraded to address the problem of server downage during ‘peak times’ for kirana stores and small vendors.
Settlement History: Shopkeepers will now see their transaction history and daily settlement reports with simpler language and graphics, making accounting easier.
5. ‘User interface’ will be easy for the elderly
Apps like Paytm and PhonePe will now have to make their interface more ‘simple’ and ‘clear’.
Simple language: Messages and alerts will now be in simple regional languages so that people of all ages, especially the elderly, can make digital payments without any fear.
Important advice for users: what to do and what not to do?
The government has made it clear that users do not need to go anywhere for these changes. Just some basic precautions need to be taken:
Keep app updated: Always keep your payment apps updated to the latest version from Play Store or App Store.
PIN and OTP: No matter how the rules change, never share your UPI PIN and OTP with anyone.
Biometric Lock: Be sure to use fingerprint or face lock on your app to add another layer of security.
