As the last date to file income tax returns (ITR) comes near, the hurry to fill it increases in people. For many taxpayers, whose accounts are to be audited, this deadline is September 15. In such a situation, the haste of the last moments often becomes the cause of mistakes. Even a small lapse can send you notice of Income Tax Department and you may have to pay heavy fine.
If you are also going to file your ITR at the last moment, then take special care of these important things so that there is no problem.
1. Choose the correct ITR form
People make the first and most common mistake in choosing the right ITR form. There are different forms based on your income source (eg salary, business, capital gains etc.). If you fill the wrong form, your return can be considered as ‘defective’ and you may have to do all the procedure again. Therefore, first of all make sure that you are filling the correct form according to your income.
2. Give all the income information
In a hurry, people often forget to give details of income from all their sources. Apart from its salary, it is necessary to show the interest of savings account, interest received from fixed deposits (FD), or earnings from any small freelance work in ITR. Even if the tax is cut on them (TDS), it is mandatory to include them in their total income. Nowadays the Income Tax Department has information about all your financial transactions, so do not try to hide anything.
3. Make sure to check Form 26AS and AIS
Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement (AIS) are the biggest help to your tax filing. These include complete information about all the financial transactions, cut TDS and tax deposited by you in a year. Before filling the ITR, download both these forms from the Income Tax Portal and match it with your income and TDS information. If there is any difference, then get it fixed in time.
4. Check personal information again
It seems very small thing to hear, but most mistakes are here. Fill your name, address, PAN number, Aadhaar number and bank account details very carefully. Especially check the bank account number and IFSC code again. If this is wrong, your tax refund may be stuck.
5. Don’t forget to verify after filing
It is not enough to file just ITR. It is equally important to verify him. Your ITR is considered incomplete without verification and the department does not take any action on it. You can easily verify it online through Aadhaar OTP, net banking or demat account.
It is better to file your return in time than waiting for the last date. But even if you are filing at the last moment, do it with a cold mind and keeping all these things in mind so that water does not move on your hard work.
