Elders say that by fasting and listening to the story of Lord Satyanarayan (who is the form of Lord Vishnu) on the full moon day, the troubles of the house end. Materials required for puja (Samagri List for Satyanarayan Katha)
Often people get nervous in the name of puja that they don’t know how much stuff they will have to bring. But Satyanarayan ji can be worshiped very simply. All you need to do is prepare a list of these important things:
- Offering: The most important ones are Panjiri (made by roasting flour and adding sugar) and Panchamrit (a mixture of milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar).
- Fruits and Flowers: Banana fruit and banana leaves are very important in this puja. Apart from this, yellow marigold flowers and basil leaves (Vishnu does not accept offerings without basil).
- Kalash installation: Copper or clay pot and a coconut to place on top of it.
- Lamp and incense: Cow ghee lamp and nice smelling incense sticks.
- Other Ingredients: Roli, Mauli (Raksha Sutra), Akshat (rice), betel nut, betel leaves and a little Ganga water.
How to do puja?
You don’t need a big pandit, you can do it yourself with devotion. Wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear clean clothes. Spread a yellow cloth on a post in the home temple and keep a picture of God. Install the Kalash and then sit with the family and read or listen to the story.
At the end, perform Aarti and blow conch shells in every corner of the house. The sound of conch and the smoke of Aarti drives out all the negativity from the house.
