News India Live, Digital Desk: Friends, often when we go shopping in big mart or stores, we have to face a common question while paying the bill: “Mam/sir, what is the carry bag?” And then 5-10 rupees are charged separately for that carry bag. Even if they are only a few rupees, but many times they pass on, because we buy goods from their stores! But, now a big decision has come in the rights of customers regarding this “carry bag charge”, which says that this act can be overshadowed by the mall.
In fact, in a similar case in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, the customer raised his voice, after which the consumer court has imposed a huge fine of ₹ 3000 on a mart. It happened that a customer came out after purchasing from Mart. When he checked the bill, he found that ₹ 7 was taken separately from the carry bag. The customer felt that this is wrong, because the store should be given free carry bags to the customers or at least before it.
Troubled by this, the customer lodged a complaint in the District Consumer Forum (Consumer Forum). The Consumer Forum investigated the entire matter and found the customer’s complaint correct. The court, while giving the verdict, said that taking money from the customer for the carry bag is the Unfair Trade Practice. Therefore, Mart will not only have to return ₹ 7 to that customer, but will also have to pay ₹ 3000 as a fine and some amount as the cost of the case.
This decision shows that as a customer, we have some rights and we should know about these rights. If a shopkeeper or store takes money in the name of carry bag, while no clear information about it is already given, then it is completely wrong. In such a situation, we should not sit silent, but should file a complaint in the consumer forum.
This fine of ₹ 3000 is just a small example of how the awareness of the customers and their standing for their rights can teach the big store a lesson. So the next time someone asks for the money of the carry bag, then make a decision only after thinking!
