Washington: The US Donald Trump administration is going to make major changes in the process of giving H-1B visas. Till now these visas were given through lottery system and now they will be announced through salary-based selection system. The office of Information and Regulatory Affairs of the White House has made a proposal in this regard. On August 8, the government approved the rule making extensive changes in the H-1B visa allocation for employees working in specific businesses.

The step has been taken under the policy ‘Buy American and give jobs to Americans’ policy. This move of the Trump administration will increase the difficulties of thousands of international students looking for future career opportunities in America. Recently graduated students will also be affected by this. This will also have a direct impact on the people of India.

What is the current rule?
H-1B visa allows American companies to appoint foreign employees in some businesses that require theoretical or technical skills. This gives them a chance to work in America for three years. Currently its annual entry is limited to 85,000 graduates. So far, new graduates and experienced professionals have been selected every year under the lottery process.

In the first term of Donald Trump, the Homeland Security Department (DHS) tried to change the lottery system for the H-1B visa. After becoming President again this year, Trump has again taken steps in this direction. The biggest feature of the new rule is that it is based on salary, not on a lottery system that treats everyone equally.

What will be the effect on Indians?
Indians dominate the American H-1B visa program. About 72 percent H-1B visas are being received by Indians. This is followed by 12 percent Chinese citizens. According to 2023 data, most H-1B visa holders work in stem areas such as data science, AI, machine learning and cyber security. 65 percent of these people are in computer -related jobs.

If the Trump administration further enhances this change, it may adversely affect Indian students and new graduates in some subjects and non-stem areas. It is believed that these changes will happen because Trump has often criticized the H-1B program. Trump says that US employers have misused the visa to appoint low -paid foreign employees.
