Tokyo: The mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki jointly invited President Donald Trump to come to Japan. In the last days of World War II, the US dropped atomic bombs on these cities on 6 and 9 August 1945 respectively on August 6 and 9 1945. On its 80th anniversary, Trump has been invited to visit those cities.
In a letter written jointly by the two mayors, he requested the President of the United States to come personally to listen to the painful stories of Hibakusha (survivors).
He was also invited during Trump’s first term as President but incidentally Trump could not go there. Both the mayors have requested them to come this time in their joint letter.
DT In this letter written on January 28, he wrote, ‘We hope that you will give up dependence on nuclear weapons and continue working for the eradication of nuclear weapons around the world and world peace.’
It is well known that in the last days of World War II, on August 6 and 9, 1945, the US dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki respectively. About 1,40,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and 74,000 in Nagasaki. Both cities were also burnt.
However, Washington never apologized for this heinous act. The survivors also died after years of radiation.
In 2010, US Ambassador John Ross joined the leaders of various countries and ambassadors, who traditionally gathered at the program to pay tribute to those killed in Hiroshima. Two years later, he attended a tribute program in Nagasaki along with other pioneers.
In this tribute program in 2016, Barack Obama, who was then President of America, also paid tribute. The President Joe Biden paid tribute to those killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 2023.
Even when Donald Trump became President for the first time, he did not go there despite the invitation of the mayors of both cities.
Last year, Nagasaki Mayor Shiro Suzuki did not invite the Ambassador of Israel to attend the tribute program, so there was a lot of discussion. At that time, Suzuki said that this decision was not political, but the Israeli ambassador was not invited to the event as there would be no peace or seriousness in the program when the protests occurred as a result of the Gaza war.
