News India Live, Digital Desk: We have all heard that “If you want to build a body, then eat eggs.” For years we have been told that meat and eggs are the best sources of protein because they are ‘complete proteins’. There is no doubt that these are excellent for repairing your muscles. But the other side of the coin says something else.
Why did plant-based protein suddenly become a ‘superstar’?
First of all, remove this misconception that there is no strength in vegetarian food. Things like pulses, chickpeas, kidney beans, soybean, peanuts and cheese are not only rich in protein, they also contain something which is not found in meat and that is Fiber.
While eating animal protein (meat/eggs), we often ignore the ‘cholesterol’ and ‘saturated fat’ hidden in it, which can cause heart diseases in the long run. On the contrary, plant-based proteins not only improve your health but also keep your digestion light and smooth.
If we compare, who is winning?
- Absorption: Here eggs win. The body digests animal protein a little more easily. But this does not mean that plant protein is inferior. If you eat a mixture of different types of vegetarian foods (like lentils and rice), you also get all the same essential amino acids.
- Prevention from diseases: Plant-based protein is a clear winner here. Research says that people who eat more vegetables and pulses have significantly less risk of diabetes, blood pressure and obesity.
- Energy Level: Many times you feel heavy or sleepy after eating meat and eggs. At the same time, plant protein makes you feel light and keeps you energetic throughout the day.
After all, what should be the decision?
See, it is not just about ‘vegetarian vs non-vegetarian’. It’s a matter of balance. Even if you are a meat lover, you should include as much plant-based protein as possible in your diet. And if you are a vegetarian, don’t be afraid to increase the amount of pulses, chia seeds, and soy in your plate, your protein quota will be easily met.
