What is the story behind this?

Long time ago, in Satyayuga, there was a very cruel demon whose name was ‘Mur’. He was so powerful that he attacked heaven and defeated all the gods and even Indra Dev had to leave his throne and run away. All the gods were defeated and went to Lord Shiva, but Lord Shiva sent them to Lord Vishnu.

Hearing the call of the gods, Lord Vishnu went to fight the demon Mur. This war continued for thousands of years. Lord Vishnu became very tired while fighting and decided to rest for some time. He went to sleep in a cave near Badrinath.

Seeing Lord Vishnu sleeping alone, the demon Mur followed him into the cave. As he raised his weapon to attack the sleeping Lord Vishnu, suddenly a divine and beautiful goddess was born from the body of Lord Vishnu. She had weapons in her hands and was very bright.

The goddess challenged the demon Mur and in the blink of an eye burnt him to ashes with her brilliance.

When Lord Vishnu woke up from his sleep, he found the demon dead and saw a goddess standing in front. He asked the goddess, “Who are you?”

The goddess said, “O Lord! I am born from your body and I have killed this demon.”

Pleased with his bravery, Lord Vishnu gave him a boon, “From today onwards your name will be ‘Ekadashi’, because you are born from my eleventh part (Ekadashi). Whoever observes your and my fast today, all his sins will be destroyed and he will attain salvation.”

That’s it, Utpanna Ekadashi fast started from that very day. This story tells us that Ekadashi is not just a fast but a power of Lord Vishnu that protects the devotees.
