In a poignant display of solidarity and national gratitude, Dubai’s Crown Prince and United Arab Emirates Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum visited Indian commercial aviator Captain Smit Machchhar in hospital, commending his extraordinary heroism and composure. Captain Machchhar is currently recuperating in an Abu Dhabi medical facility after surviving a violent mid-air knife and crash-axe assault launched by his co-pilot aboard flydubai flight FZ1073. Despite sustaining multiple grave injuries, the Indian captain successfully unlocked the cockpit door during a precipitous 14,000-foot dive, enabling crew members and passengers to rush inside, restrain the assailant, and save 174 lives.
Royal Visit and Heartfelt Tribute on Social Media
Accompanied by senior state officials, Sheikh Hamdan personally checked on Captain Machchhar’s medical recovery, interacted with his attending healthcare team, and expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the UAE’s leadership. Taking to microblogging platform X to share photographs from the bedside visit, the Dubai Crown Prince praised Machchhar’s dedication to passenger safety:
“During a visit to Captain Smit Machchhar… the flydubai pilot who embodied the highest degrees of courage, responsibility, and care for human life. From us, and from the leadership of the nation, he has our full appreciation and praise. We are proud that he is part of our team… part of the story of our nation… and part of what the UAE stands for: A nation of compassion, a nation of peace, and a nation of life.”
The royal gesture highlights the UAE’s recognition of Machchhar’s quick thinking, which averted an unprecedented aviation disaster across regional airspace.
How the Mid-Air Tragedy Was Foiled
The critical incident took place en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv when First Officer Hamam al-Hammami initiated a premeditated cockpit attack using sharp cockpit emergency tools, aiming to bring down the aircraft. Recalling the ordeal in earlier communications, Captain Machchhar shared that even as he was being assaulted and losing blood, he recognized from cockpit sensations that the Boeing 737 was entering a catastrophic descent. Summoning all his remaining strength, he reached the electronic door toggle for “one last push,” allowing passengers—including an off-duty dentist and two off-duty pilots—to force entry, overpower the attacker, and safely divert the aircraft to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Indian Diplomatic Mission Confirms Steady Recovery
The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi confirmed that Captain Machchhar is responding well to treatment and receiving top-tier medical attention. The mission reiterated that it remains in regular contact with Machchhar’s family and UAE authorities, expressing gratitude to the Emirati government for providing comprehensive care to the Indian national. The high-level hospital visit follows earlier praise from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, uniting global leaders in honoring Machchhar’s selfless resolve under extreme duress.
