BRICS Membership: Brazil currently chairs the BRICS group of developing countries. On Monday, Brazil announced that a new country, Indonesia, has joined BRICS as a full member. Indonesia is the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, as well as Pakistan, an Islamic country that seeks BRICS membership. In such a situation, Indonesia’s joining BRICS is a big blow for Pakistan. Pakistan had applied for BRICS membership in the year 2023.
Indonesia will join this group after the formation of the new government.
Pakistan was hopeful that BRICS members would approve its membership. But this did not happen. Brazil’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that bloc leaders have approved Indonesia’s membership in August 2023. However, Indonesia has decided to formally join the grouping only after the formation of a new government there.
Many countries want membership of BRICS
In the year 2009, Brazil, Russia, India and China together established this group. South Africa joined in 2010. Last year this group included Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia and UAE. Saudi Arabia has also been invited to join, but has not yet joined. Türkiye, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied for membership. Apart from this, some other countries also want membership of BRICS.
India is stopping Pakistan’s membership
Membership of BRICS is achieved by consensus. This means that no country can join BRICS if all the members do not want to. India clearly supported Indonesia’s membership. Whereas Pakistani media every time says that India is stopping its membership. America sees BRICS as an anti-Western group. Because in recent years Russia and China have been looking for an alternative to the dollar. He wants to create a currency for BRICS. But India is not completely prepared for this.
Trump threatened BRICS
The idea of BRICS countries having their own currencies angers the US. Newly elected US President Donald Trump had threatened the BRICS currency in December. Trump said the BRICS countries should be prepared to bear 100 percent tariffs if they promise not to create their own currency and support any currency other than the dollar. America and any western country are not included in BRICS.
