A claim by US President Donald Trump created a stir in diplomatic circles, but within 24 hours India has refuted this claim. Trump had said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given him ‘assurance’ that India will stop buying crude oil from Russia. But now India has given a blunt answer and has completely rejected this matter.
India’s befitting reply: “We are not aware of any such talks”
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said without any hesitation, “I have no knowledge of any phone call or conversation between the two leaders (Modi and Trump) yesterday.”
This answer in itself is enough to show that Trump’s claim is either fabricated or the result of some misunderstanding.
So what did Trump say?
Trump had confidently told reporters, “Prime Minister Modi has assured me that the purchase of oil from Russia will stop. This will not happen immediately, it will take some time, but this process will be completed soon.” Trump was calling it part of his strategy to put economic pressure on Putin to stop the Ukraine war.
India spoke clearly: Our policy is decided by our interests
Rejecting Trump’s claim, India once again made its stand on its independent foreign policy and energy security clear. Randhir Jaiswal said:

“India is a large importer of oil and gas. Our policy is driven by our national interests… Our first priority is to ensure affordable and secure energy for Indian consumers.”
In simple language, India has made it clear that it will fulfill its energy needs from where it will get the best price, and for this it will not come under any external pressure.
Why is this stand of India important?
- America’s double game: On the one hand, America calls India its friend, but on the other hand, it blames India for buying oil from Russia. Heavy tax (tariff) of up to 50% Has also been installed.
- Cheap oil, big advantage: Since the Russia-Ukraine war, Russia has been selling crude oil to India at a discount, which has helped India a lot in meeting its energy needs.
- India is not ready to bow down now: This reply of India gives a message to the world that it is now a strong and self-reliant country, which knows how to take its own decisions.
This entire episode has once again proved that Trump’s statements cannot be blindly trusted, and India is making its diplomatic moves very wisely and firmly.
