In a stirring testament to quick thinking and raw courage, Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian commander who thwarted a catastrophic mid-air emergency aboard flydubai flight FZ1073, is set to be conferred with Gujarat’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Vishisht Gujarat Garima Samman’. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel announced the state honour alongside a cash award of ₹25 lakh, lauding Machchhar’s indomitable bravery in safeguarding 174 lives under extreme life-threatening circumstances. The recognition highlights the extraordinary journey of an individual who originally charted a course for the textile trade before destiny steered him into international aviation.
Operating a Boeing 737 MAX flight bound from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Captain Machchhar faced an unprecedented mid-air assault inside the cockpit when the co-pilot attacked him. Despite sustaining severe stab wounds, Machchhar fiercely resisted the attacker and unlocked the flight deck door, enabling cabin crew and alert passengers to breach the cockpit and subdue the assailant. The aircraft, which had entered a rapid plunge dropping thousands of feet in mere seconds, was safely stabilized with the assistance of off-duty pilots travelling aboard and diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, ensuring every single passenger and crew member survived.
Unlikely Flight Path: An Accidental Pilot’s Rise
Aviation was never Captain Machchhar’s childhood ambition. Hailing from a family deeply anchored in the textile industry, Machchhar initially pursued an education in textile engineering and subsequently enrolled in business management at Mumbai’s Welingkar Institute to take charge of the family enterprise. His career trajectory took an unexpected pivot at age 19 after he attended an aviation seminar, sparking a fascination with flight operations. Overcoming early apprehensions from his mother regarding the perils of commercial flying, he pursued professional pilot training in New Zealand before earning his Boeing 737 type rating.
Over a distinguished aviation career spanning roughly 15 years, Machchhar logged more than 9,750 flying hours. He dedicated over a decade to domestic carrier SpiceJet, rising through the ranks to serve as a Senior Commander and Line Training Captain responsible for mentoring new aviators, before joining flydubai as a direct-entry captain in June 2022.
State Acclaim and Global Commendation
Lauding his heroic intervention, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that Captain Machchhar’s steadfast presence of mind averted what could have been a catastrophic disaster akin to historical aviation terror incidents. The Gujarat government emphasized that Machchhar’s grit in the face of grave physical harm has brought pride to the state and the entire nation on the global stage. Prayers were also offered for his swift recovery at the sacred Somnath Temple, as the decorated pilot continues his medical rehabilitation following the attack.
