History of statue installed on Tavistock Square
The United Nations has declared Gandhi Jayanti as International Non -Violence Day. Every year on 2 October, this memorial in London is garlanded and the favorite hymns of Gandhiji are sung. This bronze statue, built with the help of India League, was unveiled in 1968. This statue was installed in memory of Mahatma Gandhi’s days when he was a law student at a nearby University College London. There is an inscription based on the statue, ‘Mahatma Gandhi 1869–1948’. Officials of the Metropolitan Police and local Camden Council said they were investigating the case.
