Ganja smuggling busted in Kharagpur, seven inter-state smugglers arrested

Kharagpur, December 23: Kharagpur Rural Police Station has achieved major success against drug smuggling and arrested seven inter-state smugglers with 22 kg of ganja. During this period, a truck and a Scorpio vehicle used in smuggling have also been seized.

In a press conference held at Kharagpur rural police station premises on Monday evening, Kharagpur SDPO Dheeraj Thakur confirmed the incident and said that the police had recently received secret information about criminal activities related to ganja smuggling. Based on the information, Kharagpur Rural Police Station conducted a special operation in Kaliada area near Basantpur on National Highway-16. During the operation, a truck and a Scorpio vehicle were stopped and when searched, a total of 22 kg of ganja was recovered.

SDPO said that during the action, Rs 11,000 in cash and fake number plates of some vehicles were also seized from the accused. Preliminary investigation has revealed that all the seven arrested accused are associated with an organized interstate ganja smuggling gang and have connections to Bihar, Haryana and other states.

According to the police, all the seven accused were produced before the Kharagpur divisional court on Monday, where the court sent them to 10-day police custody. The police is now busy interrogating the arrested accused to find out the entire smuggling network, sources of supply and possible destinations.

SDPO Dheeraj Thakur said, “Police are continuously running operations to stop drug trafficking. No accused involved in such crimes will be spared.”
