News India Live, Digital Desk: Two of the biggest pillars of Indian cricket, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, will we no longer be seen playing T20 cricket? This question is revolving in the mind of every cricket fan and now the great former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has given further fuel to this debate. Gavaskar has made such a prediction regarding the T20 future of these two great players, which has created a stir in the cricket world.
The ‘Little Master’ believes that Virat and Rohit can now distance themselves from the shortest format of cricket i.e. T20 so that they can concentrate completely on ODI and Test cricket.
What did Gavaskar say after all?
Speaking on a sports channel, Sunil Gavaskar said, “The next T20 World Cup is after two years. At that time Rohit will be around 39 and Virat will be 38. So, it is natural that they would want to keep themselves fresh for ODI and Test cricket.”
He further clarified his prediction and said, “I would not be surprised at all if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are no longer seen playing in T20 international matches.”
Giving the reasoning behind this, Gavaskar said that both these players are so important for India that the team management would want them to be completely fit and fresh for the big formats (Test and ODI), especially when big tournaments like Test Championship and ODI World Cup are coming.
Is this the end of an era?
This statement of Gavaskar indicates that a period of big change can now begin in Indian cricket, where young players will be given more and more opportunities in the T20 format. What Virat and Rohit have done for Indian cricket is incredible, and if they indeed decide to retire from T20 cricket, it will be the end of an era in Indian T20 cricket.
However, till now no official statement has come on this either from BCCI or from these two players. But this statement of a big legend like Gavaskar will definitely intensify this discussion.
