News India Live, Digital Desk: T20 World Cup 2026 has been no less than a roller-coaster ride for Abhishek Sharma. He was under immense pressure after getting out for three consecutive ‘ducks’ (0 runs) at the beginning of the tournament, but he silenced the critics by playing a stormy innings of 52 runs in 21 balls against New Zealand in the final.

1. Not ‘out of form’, ‘out of runs’

Abhishek revealed that when he was continuously flopping, Gautam Gambhir had told him, “You are not out of form, you are just not getting runs. There is a big difference between the two.” Gambhir gave him his 2014 example when he himself was out for consecutive zeroes in the IPL. This candid conversation changed Abhishek’s perspective.

2. ‘Keep distance from social media’

When Abhishek started getting criticized on social media after continuous poor performance, he was mentally disturbed. According to Abhishek, Gautam Gambhir, captain Surya and Hardik Pandya had given him strict instructions – “Hold the phone and uninstall social media right now.” Abhishek says that this ‘bitter medicine’ helped him focus on the game by protecting him from external noise.

3. Emphasis on ‘Impact’, not ‘Milestone’

Abhishek told that there is no place for personal records in Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style. The coach’s instructions were clear: “Whether you score 20 or 50 in 5 balls, your impact should be on the team’s victory.” Due to this fearless thinking, Abhishek was able to bat aggressively from the very first ball on a big stage like the final.

4. ‘Tournament of Extremes’

Abhishek described this World Cup as a ‘tournament of extreme’. He said that here he saw both the lowest point of failure (3 ducks) and the highest peak of success (World Cup win and fifty in the final). According to him, honest conversations with Gautam Gambhir saved him from an emotional breakdown.
